Market Your Music

By Sean De Nogla

Over a period of time and on various different projects I have tried all manner of promotional devices for music on the Internet. By far the most consistent method I have found to bring listeners to music is blogging.

There are a number of reasons for this:
  1. Because you are generating a number of new pages with each new post you are constantly making new content for search engines.
  2. Apart from having more pages, all of the major search engine algorithms are aware of the nature of blogs and the constantly updated material. Once your blog has been indexed and identified as such it will cause the search engine robots to pay more attention and visit more frequently.
  3. Pinging is a process where you notify the major search engines and blog directories of any updates to your blog. This can be set up so that it happens automatically every time you make a new posting. The real trick here is setting up your ping list so that it notifies all the important services. (The list is pretty long).
  4. Tagging is also a very important part of the blogging process. This basically means that you “tag” your individual posts with relevant keywords which allow them to be categorized more easily by search engines, blog directories and social bookmarking sites.
  5. Web 2.0 has been a buzz term on the Internet for little while now. Basically, it revolves around sites where you can search for and identify relevant information in a very similar fashion to the traditional search engines. The major difference is that the results are based on human ratings of the material rather than search engine robot algorithms. Social bookmarking sites are at the core of this movement. This is very relevant to how you go about promoting your blog as well.
What I have outlined above is a very basic outline of some of the reasons why blogging can be such an effective method to bring new visitors to your music. Like anything, blogging involves a set of skills and just throwing up a page on blogger or using the provided service with a Myspace profile will not bring you that many new visitors in isolation.

On the other hand, a properly optimized blog and correct use of pinging, tagging, social bookmarking, relevant commenting and several other devices will bring hundreds if not thousands of new listeners to your music.

As I said, of all the different available Internet promotion ideas I have found this to be the single most effective technique. I hope you have found this article useful and if you really want to grow your fan base start blogging!

Why Popular Kadus Songs Unable To Penetrate Global Market?

Interesting topic started by apai at Kadus Entertainment Forum. Although this topic has generated over 10 pages of mixed opinions from the forummers, some are just 'chats' as usual. Only few posts contributed to the topic at hand. However, after reading most of the posts, I still couldn't make a good conclusion "Why Popular Kadus Songs Unable To Penetrate Global Market?".

Is it because of the following factors?

1. Lack of promotion
2. Lack of radio airtime
3. Song composition
4. Poor song arrangement
5. Overall production quality
6. Poor design for album cover
7. English language not mixed into the songs
8. Quality of voice
9. Personality of the Kadus artist
10. etc

I consider these posts related to the topic:

1. Post by apai here.
2. Post by pinolobu here and here.
3. Post by ATAMA

My opinion on this matter is actually very simple. For me, it is because the lack of budget for promotion. If the overall budget to produce an album, including cover design & printing, duplicating, promotion is only RM5,000 to RM10,000, which is quite high especially for indie artists, don't talk about going global. Efforts should be concentrated on the local market first. Strenghtened the base for Kadus music industry locally. No matter how good the quality of song or album production is, the album must be promoted and money for promotion must be spent, especially if selling high is the main target. A bigger budget MUST be provided if global market is targeted.

I also tend to agree to the post made by kippo here.

"Was there any attempt made to promote Kadus album globally? If yes, was it made correctly?" I don't think so considering the very small budget for overall album production. I'm quite sure none of the Kadus albums were meant to be promoted globally. Even local promotions were very weak and usually hardly noticed by Kadus music fans.

According to apai in this post, very few (may be none) recording studio owners in Sabah dare to invest a big sum of money to produce an album. Now, it's quite clear "Why Popular Kadus Songs Unable To Penetrate Global Market", it's because lack of budget for promotion, even locally and nobody (just a wild guest) actually attempted to promote Kadus album globally. So there's no surprise actually on why even the locally popular Kadus songs unable to go global. As a supporter to the local Kadus music industry, I really hope someday our songs can go global.

I think producer of Kadus album as well as Kadus artist, especially the indipendents, from now on should consider using the popularity of the internet as one of their marketing tool.

Danny F. Malinggi Not In The List?

Shocking! Danny F. Malinggi is not in the list of contestant for the Dusun Songs Champion Of Champions 2007. I'm still in the dark why is that so. Could it be because he never released his album? Or, did he pulled out from the competition? Or,is it because the 'production company' denied him right to contest?

Read the rest of the story here.

Kadus Artists Who Can't Speak Kadus Fluently

This is one of the hot issues discussed in the Kadus Entertainment Forum. The post was originally made by pindiktagap in the comment section.

A lot of forummers, artists and fans participated in the discussion with mixed opinions. Lot of interesting posts, but this one made by Sandy caught my attention.
